Church History

The Methodist Movement was born in England in the 1700’s as a spiritual renewal movement, courageously led by John Wesley. A Methodist preacher named Francis Asbury later came to America in 1771 and became the most influential methodist leader in America, rightfully becoming our church’s namesake.

A traveling Methodist preacher first held services in Waterford in 1814, and Asbury Methodist Church became officially organized in 1835.

Our original building at the corner of Fourth and Cherry streets burned in 1946. At that time, the United Presbyterians invited their Methodist brothers and sisters to use their building at West Second and Walnut Streets. The church continued to grow and the Western Pennsylvania Methodist Confrence bought the property in 1947. Several building projects have expanded and improved the facility over the years.

In July of 2023 Asbury United Methodist Church, as a congregation, made the unanimous decision to migrate to Global Methodism. We are now known as Asbury Global Methodist Church.

We are honored to carry on the Methodist tradition of making spirit-filled disciples of Jesus Chirst!
